September Monthly Meeting

Our September monthly meeting will be held at the Brown and Caldwell office in Walnut Creek! The address is 201 N Civic Dr Suite 300, Walnut Creek, CA 94596, and we will begin at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, September 9, 2025. Take the South Lobby elevator to the 3rd floor.

The presentation is titled Overview of Pressure Pipe Rehabilitation and will be provided by Adam Brown (BKF). Gravity pipe rehabilitation has been widely adopted for decades, but pressure pipe rehabilitation continues to be an area of uncertainty for many asset owners. With different products and processes available to engineers and owners, it can be hard to know which ones may be suitable for a given situation. This presentation will cover a high-level overview of pressure pipe rehabilitation methods such as spray-on lining, sliplining (including FFRP), CIPP, pipe bursting, spray-in-place pipe, and close tolerance pipe slurification. August Monthly Meeting

Our August monthly meeting will be held at the Brown and Caldwell office in Walnut Creek! The address is 201 N Civic Dr Suite 300, Walnut Creek, CA 94596, and we will begin at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, July 8th, 2025. Take the South Lobby elevator to the 3rd floor.

The presentation is titled West County Wastewater’s Progressive Design Build Treatment Plant Project, and will be provided by Guyton Durnin (HDR). Guyton will be presenting on West County Wastewater’s (WCW) 60-year-old 12.5 MGD wastewater treatment plant being upgraded using a progressive design-build (PDB) contract. This project aims to reduce energy consumption and GHG emissions, improve operational safety and efficiency, and improve the quality of the biosolids produced. Consistent with the vision and strategic goals, this project will result in the development of sustainability upgrades that support WCW’s strategic initiatives to adopt infrastructure maintenance and modernization strategies that maximize performance, reduce risk, and ensure reliable service in collaboration with local, regional, and national partners to further the mission of WCW. This will allow WCW to be an environmental steward in our community through a commitment to reducing carbon emissions, maximizing resource recovery, minimizing our ecological footprint and making significant strides toward becoming a carbon-neutral enterprise. The presentation will include some lessons learned in regards to working at a 70 year old facility with as builts that don’t always tell the truth on what is abandoned pipe and what is something that can lead to 20,000 gallons of sludge in your excavation. Presentation can be downloaded here.

July Monthly Meeting

Our July monthly meeting will be held at the Brown and Caldwell office in Walnut Creek! The address is 201 N Civic Dr Suite 300, Walnut Creek, CA 94596, and we will begin at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, July 8th, 2025. Take the South Lobby elevator to the 3rd floor.

The presentation will be provided by Xavier Irias, Senior Technical Practice Leader at Woodard & Curran, and is titled “The Seven Deadly Sins of Data Collection and Use”. Every day, in every city, field data are collected to support infrastructure projects: data such as storm drain inverts, locations of water valves, or key topo shots. And every day, one or more of the Seven Deadly Sins of Data Collection and Use are committed, resulting in the risk of design errors and construction snafus. The sins range from those made in the field during data collection, to those made in the office when using the data. This presentation will describe some common mistakes, aka “sins”, and provide straightforward ways to avoid them including proper use of standards.

June Monthly Meeting

Our June monthly meeting will be held at the Brown and Caldwell office in Walnut Creek! The address is 201 N Civic Dr Suite 300, Walnut Creek, CA 94596, and we will begin at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, June 10th, 2025. Take the South Lobby elevator to the 3rd floor.

The presentation will be provided by Kurt Chirbas, West Region Manager for GeoTree Solutions and is titled  “Environmental Considerations During Trenchless Rehabilitation, Spray Applied Pipe Liners”. The presentation looks at the key factors of potential environmental consideration issues for Spray Applied Pipe Lining (SAPL) vs other trenchless technologies for structural rehabilitation, such as water quality, air emissions, aquatic life, distribution to the public or requiring a significant amount of water during rehabilitation activities.  The presentation will include case studies on how environmental concerns were addressed when using SAPL, including permitting, specifications, installation and resuming flow through rehabilitated pipe.
